THE TELEVISION SERIES

THE MONKEES television series produced 58 episodes, as well as several variants as the songs were substituted for newer tracks when rerun and packaged for syndication. Prior to 1995, the television episodes were released in various volumes on VHS, Betamax and laserdisc. Twelve episodes were released, two per volume, between July 1986 and June 1987.

The first large collection of episodes was a laserdisc box set released by VAP Video in Japan in October 1992. Simply titled The Monkees, this set gathered 40 episodes with English and Japanese tracks. What made this set collectable was the inclusion of several episodes with their soundtracks altered for repeats and syndication.

The first release of the entire television run was a VHS box set released October 1995 and consisted of 21 videotapes packaged in a box designed to look like a television. 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee was also included, as well as the original version of the pilot episode. All 58 episodes in addition to 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee were also released separately by Columbia House on VHS. Between 1996 and 2000, various pairings of episodes were released to retail, as well as standalone VHS releases of 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee and The Christmas Show. A collection of four episodes with newly-shot linking material with all four Monkees was released as Our Favorite Episodes on VHS (as a bonus inside the Monkees lunchbox) and DVD, making the four episodes included (Hitting The High Seas, Monkee vs. Machine, Mijacogeo - The Frodis Caper and Fairy Tale) the first to be released in that format.

This was followed by a DVD release of season one in May 2003 and season two in November 2003. The DVDs were packaged in cardboard cases which borrowed elements of original singles sleeves, and all were included in a box designed to look like a record player. There was some bonus material included here as well, including commentaries on various episodes. These were rereleased in more standard packaging in September 2011.

The final word on the television series will likely be the release of The Complete Series on Blu-Ray, a ten-disc set that contains remastered versions of the entire series, as well as Head, 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, and a bonus disc packed with unreleased and rare content.

The list of television episodes and specials follows, with episode repeats listed if they included an alternate song to the original airing. New songs added to that broadcast are listed, as well as any home video that was released separately from collected sets of the full series.

HEAD

Head saw its first home release on videotape and laserdisc in September 1986. Rhino rereleased the film on VHS in January 1995 and on DVD in July 1998. The DVD featured, for the first time, trailers and TV spots for the film as bonus features. The film was later released in November 2010 on Blu-Ray as part of the America Lost And Found: The BBS Story box set, which was also released shortly after on DVD. A commentary with all four Monkees was assembled, and some more bonus features were added to the previous set of trailers, including the original screen tests uncut for the first time. The superior transfer of Head included here is the same transfer as found on The Complete Series set noted in the TELEVISION SERIES section.
